2nd Chance: Supporting Dual Language Learners Series: DLL Introduction and Orientation Part 1/4.

CocoKids and District 4 Supervisor Ken Carlson invite you to a four-part workshop series and community of practice focused on strengthening inclusive practices for children learning more than one language and their families. This series builds confidence and capacity to create learning environments that honor children’s languages, cultures, and identities.

By attending this workshop, you are eligible to be part of a Dual Language Learner cohort. After completing the 4 scheduled classes, you will be receive a kit full of materials that support dual language programs.

They Dual Language Learning Series consist of 4 workshops:

1.Topic: Supporting Dual Language Learners Series Introduction and Orientation
Presented by: Alexis Ford, CocoKids Monday, June 1st 6:30 pm-8:30 pm *This is a second make-up session through Zoom. This is the only workshop in the series presented online”
This session introduces the importance of supporting Dual Language Learners, shares key strategies for working effectively with them, and provides an overview of what to expect throughout the series.

2.Topic: Environmental Supports
Presented by: Thena Gee, Faculty Instructor, Cañada College Saturday, July 11th 9:30 am-11:30 am
This session will reflect on how to enhance the environment to create linguistically and culturally responsive spaces that promote belonging and build confidence to honor children’s languages, cultures, and identities.

3.Topic: Instructional Support
Presented by: BlackECE Saturday, September 12th (during Early Learning Conference)
This session invites educators to reimagine literacy as an identity-affirming, culturally responsive practice that not only improves achievement but also nurtures students’ sense of belonging and agency.

4.Topic: Family Engagement
Presented by: Tandem Partners in Learning Saturday, November 14th 9:30 am-11:30 am
This session is designed to increase provider knowledge and confidence in supporting the whole child and their family.

Notes:
• There will be four additional Communities of Practice (C.O.P.) They are optional, but all participants are encouraged to join.
• Classroom materials will be given for attending and completing the training series.
• All providers are welcome to apply, and priority will be given to providers in the following cities: Clayton, Pleasant Hill, and portions of Concord and Walnut Creek.
